Workshops on conservation mounting and framing of art on paper
York Minster Library
28-29 June 2005

Tutor: Richard Hawkes
Places limited to 10 people

Cost: UKUKP80 per day before 1st May 2005; UKUKP90 after. Cost
includes morning and afternoon refreshments.

Workshop will enable participants to create stable methods of
housing and display for works of art, each with a high quality of
finish. These are practical courses aimed at paper conservators, or
those in related disciplines, who want to add to or develop their
skills. The courses will include both demonstration and
practical-based sessions. Each participant will receive a copy of
comprehensive course notes, outlining techniques, materials and
suppliers.

Day one: Participants will refine techniques for a variety of
inlays, float-mounting, guarding, lining and hinging. The range of
materials and their uses will be discussed. Solutions for mounting
potential problem media, such as pastels will be taught.

Day two: A wide range of mount variations for different situations
will be demonstrated. Mount cutting and constructions will be
practised. Conservation framing, with particular emphasis on methods
of re-using historic frames and framing materials will be taught.
There will also be discussion and demonstration of the wide range of
materials available; tapes, barrier layers, boards, glazing and
adhesives.
