Drue Heinz Book Conservator (Full-time)
The Pierpont Morgan Library
Job Responsibilities

The Pierpont Morgan Library is accepting applications for the
position of the Drue Heinz Book Conservator in the Thaw Conservation
Center, a world-class laboratory for the conservation of works on
paper and vellum--illuminated manuscripts, drawings, rare books,
fine bindings and literary, historical, music manuscripts--as well
as a place for conservation studies. For more information about the

Operating within the context of a comprehensive preservation
program, the Drue Heinz Book Conservator is responsible for
performing and supervising conservation treatments and bindings in
accordance to professional ethics and practice in order to preserve
the unique artistic and historic significance of the Library's rare
books and manuscripts. S/he will be actively involved in all loan
and exhibition-related activities, as well as research and teaching.

Qualifications:

    *   Graduate degree in conservation from a recognized training
        program or equivalent, plus ten years of museum/library
        experience treating rare books and vellum manuscripts

    *   Mastery of all routine and complex book conservation
        treatments and bindings, including imaginative solutions to
        preserving original materials and structures, specialized
        historic bindings and techniques, to be demonstrated by a
        portfolio

    *   Extensive knowledge of the history of bindings and book
        structures, printed books, printing, and paper/vellum
        manufacture

    *   Ability to handle rare and fragile materials and work with
        small tools with accuracy and precision

    *   Understanding of and adherence to the AIC Code of Ethics and
        Guidelines for Practice

    *   Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of bound
        materials, the substances used to treat them and the
        analytical techniques for identifying and/or determining
        changes in them

    *   Awareness of a variety of treatment/binding approaches and
        their physical, chemical, and aesthetic outcomes

    *   Proficiency working in a Microsoft Windows environment

    *   Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

    *   Familiarity with foreign languages and bibliographic systems
