The University Libraries of Notre Dame seek a dynamic preservation
librarian to lead their well-established preservation program which
comprises binding and shelf preparation, conservation, disaster
planning and recovery, mass deacidification, preservation imaging
and reformatting, HVAC and physical environment monitoring,
preservation education, and other preservation initiatives. The
Department Head manages an NEH preservation microfilming project and
collaborates with other library departments to provide preservation
perspectives in regard to the Libraries' growing digital
initiatives. The preservation department is supported by a
conservator, six FTE support staff, and additional grant project
staff.

In cooperation with library stakeholders, develops and establishes
preservation goals, objectives, programs, and policies. Evaluates
collections for preservation needs and works in close cooperation
with subject librarians in setting preservation priorities.
Evaluates and implements new technologies as appropriate to the
preservation needs of collections. Manages the preservation budget.
Oversees grant-funded projects and pursues grant opportunities for
special preservation programs. Maintains disaster plan and oversees
disaster response team. Motivates and leads staff in a productive
and collaborative working environment. Participates in the Library
Administrators and Managers Group and the Department Heads of the
Resources and Collection Services Division. Reports to the Associate
Director for Resources and Collection Services.

As a member of the Library Faculty, participates in faculty and
professional activities in the University Libraries, within the
University, and in library or other professional organizations.
Maintains memberships and actively participates in relevant
professional organizations. Engages in professional development,
scholarship and service to the profession with a commitment to
continuing growth and development. Contributes to the profession's
growth through scholarship related to librarianship, information
science, or other relevant fields. Helps to shape future library
service by participating on library wide planning teams, through
individual collaborations through the Libraries and by leading or
assisting in developmental projects.

Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library
program. Minimum of three years management experience within a
comprehensive preservation program at a research library, or a
comparable combination of professional training and experience.
Current knowledge of preservation theory and trends. Specialized
preservation reformatting experience, including knowledge of
technical procedures, standards, and best practices for preservation
microfilming and digitization. Proven record in successfully
applying for and managing grant funded projects. Strong initiative
and analytical skills, including program assessment and planning
experience. Evidence of successful managerial and organizational
skills, including budget management and supervisory skills. Must
have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication
skills, as well as the proven ability to build consensus, serve as
member of a team, and establish a creative and positive work
environment.

Salary and Benefits: Minimum starting salary $40,000 USD.
Appointment salary and Rank are competitive, commensurate with
experience and qualifications. Librarians are non-tenure track
members of the faculty and earn 20 days vacation annually. The
University offers an excellent benefits package.

faculty, located in northern Indiana ninety miles from Chicago. On a
highly residential campus, approximately 8,200 undergraduate and
3,100 graduate students pursue a broad range of studies. The
University Libraries house over 2.6 million volumes within the main
Hesburgh Library and seven branch libraries and currently subscribe
to nearly 17,000 serials. The Libraries have a dynamic staff of 198
including 48 librarians.
