CollAsia 2010 International course on the conservation of textiles in Southeast Asian Collections Leiden, The Netherlands Aug 24-Sep 17, 2005 (3.5 weeks) Partners: ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) SEAMEO-SPAFA (Southest Asian Ministers of Education Organization, Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts) National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, the Netherlands The Getty Foundation Aim: The course aims at improving the capacity of professionals working with Southeast Asian textile collections to devise long-term conservation strategies. For the purposes of the course, textile objects will be understood as woven and non-woven structures made of both natural and man-made materials. The course will examine the specificity of the materials and techniques used in making Southeast Asian textiles, the messages contained in the objects and their significance, processes of deterioration, as well as storage and exhibition concerns. On the basis of this information, different conservation options will be discussed and analysed, with a view to promoting systematic approaches based on applied and low-cost solutions. Special emphasis will be placed on the importance of networking for professional growth and institutional collaboration, culminating in participation in the 14th Triennial Meeting of the ICOM-CC in the Hague at the final phase of the course. Course Methodology: The workshop will consist of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical. Study visits to different heritage institutions in the Netherlands will include joint working sessions with the relevant staff of the host institution. Participation in the 14th Triennial Meeting of the ICOM-CC, the largest international gathering of conservation professionals, will form an integral part of the course programme. Participants: Twenty heritage professionals working with Southeast Asian heritage collections. Up to 6 places will be available for professionals working with Southeast Asian heritage in institutions outside the Southeast Asia region. At least 3 years of working experience will be required. Teaching Team: Conservation and heritage specialists from the networks of the organising institutions. Working language: English Scholarships: Scholarships covering round-trip travel and/or subsistence accommodation and meals) in Leiden during the course are available for participants from Southeast Asia.
