Subject: Users' Group for Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography (MaSC)
MaSC Workshop and Meeting Amsterdam September 2005 The next MaSC workshop will be held at AMOLF (Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics) in Amsterdam on September 7-8, 2005 and the MaSC meeting will be held at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam on September 9-10, 2005. MaSC Workshop The workshop will be conducted by AMOLF staff and will cover two mass spectrometric (MS) techniques available at AMOLF - SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) and DTMS (Direct Temperature Resolved Mass Spectrometry). The workshop will focus on a variety of material types of interest to MaSC members. The first day will provide an introduction to MS in general and to both SIMS and DTMS. The second day will be a practical workshop using SIMS and DTMS. The results from samples provided in advance by the participants will be discussed and there will be the possibility to run a limited number of these samples during the workshop. Space will be limited to 10 participants for the practical workshop, although more people will be able to attend the day of theory only. People wishing to participate are requested to submit a short paragraph of justification describing what they hope to obtain from the workshop. This should be sent to Ester Ferreira <e.ferreira<-a t->amolf< . >nl). Possible samples for submission should also be discussed with Ester Ferreira. There will be a reception for the workshop at AMOLF on Wednesday and a dinner (at participants' own cost) the same evening. Further information about the costs will be sent asap but will not exceed EUR100. See also <URL:http://www.amolf.nl> MaSC Meeting The MaSC meeting will consist of a day and a half of discussions and presentations on a wide range of mass spectrometric and chromatographic techniques and their application to the analysis of cultural heritage. Discussion of work in progress is strongly encouraged. Members interested in presenting at this meeting should contact Klaas Jan van den Berg (klaas.jan.vd.berg<-a t->icn< . >nl) by 3rd June. A full programme will be distributed as soon as it has been finalised. At the conclusion of the MaSC meeting there will follow immediately a meeting dedicated to metal soaps/protrusions organised by Jaap Boon of AMOLF. This meeting will be of interest to MaSC members and all people attending the MaSC meeting are invited to join this afternoon session (more details will follow). There will be a dinner arranged for Friday evening in Amsterdam (at participants' own cost) at around 18:00. Further information about the costs will be sent asap but will not exceed EUR70. Note: Members should be aware that there is a very large international conference being held in Amsterdam September 10-13, 2005 which is usually attended by some 40-50,000 people and so accommodation in Amsterdam is likely to be very difficult to find. It may be possible to book accommodation in Amsterdam if you are attending the MaSC workshop (although you should do this as soon as possible) but you may experience difficulty in booking accommodation in Amsterdam for the MaSC meeting. It is therefore suggested that you book accommodation in Den Haag, Haarlem or Utrecht. There is an excellent train service between each of these cities and Amsterdam (20-40 minutes journey time).
