Binghamton University Libraries seek an enthusiastic, collegial,
service-oriented and dynamic Head of Special Collections The Head of
special collections reports to the Director of Libraries; serves as
part of the senior administrative team and collaborates with the
Associate Directors in providing overall direction for the Libraries
in fulfilling the research, teaching, and service mission of the
University.  The Head of Special Collections supervises the
University Archivist, Special Collections and Preservation staff.

Responsibilities: The Head of Special Collections, Preservation and
Archives directs and provides leadership in the  development,
management and services for the Binghamton University Libraries'
special collections, rare books, archives and manuscripts. The
Preservation Unit is responsible for preservation planning,
decisions, and activities pertaining to all Libraries' collections
in the Glenn G. Bartle and the Science Libraries. The division is
comprised of library faculty, professional employees and classified
staff.

The successful candidate will show evidence of creativity,
initiative, and flexibility; demonstrate the ability to lead a
technologically dynamic organization; and work collaboratively to
build partnerships within the Libraries, with teaching faculty, and
across the University to promote the Libraries as the intellectual
center of the University. We seek a coalition builder and team
player who will help shape the future of a growing research library.
The Head of Special Collections, Preservation and Archives directs
and provides leadership in the  development, management and services
for the Binghamton University Libraries' special collections, rare
books, archives and manuscripts. The Preservation Unit is
responsible for preservation planning, decisions, and activities
pertaining to all Libraries' collections in the Glenn G. Bartle and
the Science Libraries. The division includes library faculty,
professional employees and classified staff.

The Head of special collections reports to the Director of
Libraries; serves as part of the senior administrative team and

direction for the Libraries in fulfilling the research, teaching,
and service mission of the University.  The Head of Special
Collections supervises the University Archivist, Special Collections
and Preservation staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    1.  Serve as the senior administrator for Special Collections,
        Preservation and Archives in the Bartle and the Science
        Libraries for collection development, preservation, on-site
        and digital access, information and research services,
        scholarly communication, digital initiatives and reference
        service for the unit.

    2.  Set priorities and lead strategic planning, policy
        formation, budget and resource allocation, and
        identification of staff training and professional
        development needs.

    3.  Expand awareness of Special through exhibits, publications,
        instructional programs, presentations and lectures, and
        other activities.  Work closely with faculty, students,
        alumni and others in the wider community to interpret the
        collections and promote an understanding of their value to
        teaching and scholarship.

    4.  Work with the Director of Libraries and the Libraries
        Development Officer to advance the Libraries relationship
        with current and prospective donors and assist as needed in
        the Libraries fund-raising initiatives. Represent the
        Libraries as appropriate to donors, academic departments and
        University offices, local, state, and national organizations
        and networks.

    5.  Maintain knowledge of current trends in scholarly
        communication and emerging information technologies.

    6.  Identify materials in Rare Books and Special Collections
        that are suitable for digitizing.  In cooperation with other
        divisions of the Libraries, plan and implement digitizing
        projects.

    7.  Provide leadership in representing the Libraries in
        national, state, and local organizations and networks.

    8.  Administer the Special Collections and Preservation units,
        including responsibility for staff evaluations and
        performance programs, reports, statistics, budget, equipment
        and supplies, liaison for maintenance problems, development
        and implementation of, and documentation for, policies and
        procedures.

    9.  Develop and direct the Libraries' preservation activities,
        including development and implementation of a comprehensive
        preservation program for the Libraries.

    10. Develop and manage the Libraries' special collections, rare
        books archives and manuscripts collections.

    11. Direct and lead in the preparation of proposals for outside
        funding for digitization, cataloging and preserving special
        collections; manage the execution of funded proposals.

Qualifications:

Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program, successful managerial
experience in a research university or comparable setting
demonstrating leadership and creative change management; a strong
service orientation; a love of special collections and a knowledge
of the special collections, rare book and manuscripts community; an
appreciation and commitment to technology and its role in expanding
and enriching access to information; a talent and enthusiasm for
fundraising and donor relations.

Preferred: Second advanced degree.

The Binghamton University library system is composed of the Glenn G.
Bartle Library, serving the Social Sciences and Humanities Divisions
of Harpur College, the School of Education and Human Development,
and the School of Management; and the Science Library, a branch
library serving the Science and Mathematics Divisions of Harpur
College, the Decker School of Nursing, and the Watson School of
Engineering.

Finalists invited for an interview will demonstrate communications
skills and knowledge of trends in librarianship through a
presentation to library faculty, staff, and other members of the
University community.

This is a tenure track position. The successful candidate will have
a combination of experience, education, and professional involvement
to qualify for a senior level appointment. Competitive salary
commensurate with qualifications and experience plus excellent
