Preservation Co-ordinator The British Library St Pancras, London Salary cUKP23-27k The British Library is one of the greatest research libraries in the world. An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of Preservation Co-ordinator within the Preservation, Collection Care department. The purpose of this post is to work as part of a team to co-ordinate preservation programmes at the British Library. The role's main focus is to raise awareness of, and disseminate good practice about, preservation issues both within the British Library and to a wider audience. We'll look to you to co-ordinate an integrated pest management programme for the BL and act as the main focus within Collection Care. This will involve the set-up of a central register to survey incidents of pest infestation, monitor the presence of insects and rodents and ensure traps are checked and contents identified. You will keep a record of treatments for affected items and take responsibility for overseeing items identified for treatment. Working with the Salvage Preservation Co-ordinator, you will raise standards to best practice in line with 'Benchmarks in Collection Care', raise awareness of, and disseminate good practice about, preservation issues and enable preservation to be a shared responsibility of the organisation. The role will also call for you to work closely with other preservation staff in rolling out a programme of handling training. Close working ties will also be needed across the BL helping develop and raise the profile of Collection Care to help strengthen cross-boundary working and to work with other BL departments to ensure that Collection Care activities are scheduled and supported. Your role will call for your support and contribution to the design and development of the Collection Care intranet and web pages. This will include researching the nature of other conservation/preservation websites, with particular view to visual impact and navigation and ensuring Collection Care web pages are updated. With a relevant vocational or professional qualification (first class degree desirable), you will have a current knowledge of the issues relating to the preservation of library and archive materials and an awareness of current conservation practice, along with a thorough understanding of conservation and preservation ethics. An effective communicator both orally and in writing, you will also possess the necessary skills to negotiate, influence, partner and network.
