Preservation Co-ordinator
The British Library
St Pancras, London
Salary cUKP23-27k

The British Library is one of the greatest research libraries in the
world. Our modernisation programme ensures that we keep pace with
other international libraries. We continue to set standards with our
integrated management of the nation's digital and printed
collection.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of Preservation
Co-ordinator within the Preservation, Collection Care department.
The purpose of this post is to work as part of a team to co-ordinate
preservation programmes at the British Library. The role's main
focus is to raise awareness of, and disseminate good practice about,
preservation issues both within the British Library and to a wider
audience.

We'll look to you to co-ordinate an integrated pest management
programme for the BL and act as the main focus within Collection
Care. This will involve the set-up of a central register to survey
incidents of pest infestation, monitor the presence of insects and
rodents and ensure traps are checked and contents identified. You
will keep a record of treatments for affected items and take
responsibility for overseeing items identified for treatment.

Working with the Salvage Preservation Co-ordinator, you will raise
standards to best practice in line with 'Benchmarks in Collection
Care', raise awareness of, and disseminate good practice about,
preservation issues and enable preservation to be a shared
responsibility of the organisation. The role will also call for you
to work closely with other preservation staff in rolling out a
programme of handling training. Close working ties will also be
needed across the BL helping develop and raise the profile of
Collection Care to help strengthen cross-boundary working and to
work with other BL departments to ensure that Collection Care
activities are scheduled and supported.

Your role will call for your support and contribution to the design
and development of the Collection Care intranet and web pages. This
will include researching the nature of other
conservation/preservation websites, with particular view to visual
impact and navigation and ensuring Collection Care web pages are
updated.

With a relevant vocational or professional qualification (first
class degree desirable), you will have a current knowledge of the
issues relating to the preservation of library and archive materials
and an awareness of current conservation practice, along with a
thorough understanding of conservation and preservation ethics. An
effective communicator both orally and in writing, you will also
possess the necessary skills to negotiate, influence, partner and
network. In addition, you will be excellent in organising and
delivering presentations and have the ability to work as part of a
team.
