Supervisory Museum Specialist (Art) Paper Conservation Laboratory National Gallery of Art Washington DC Duties: Incumbent serves as the Head of Paper Conservation on the staff of the National Gallery's Conservation Division. Provides administrative oversight of the paper conservation staff and carries out examination and treatment of collection objects. Maintains collections of photographs both in the Department of Photography and the thousands of rare archival objects in the Library Image Collections, as well as rare books in the Library's collections. Oversees the condition assessment and the treatment analysis of various objects under consideration for purchase, donation, or loan. Conducts research in the history, materials and technology of works of art on paper and develops methods and materials of conservation as they pertain to the Gallery's collections. Shares findings with colleagues and in scholarly meetings and publications, representing the National Gallery in academic, professional, and trade matters related to the Gallery's collections and paper conservation issues. Qualifications: Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-1016-14 or GS-1016-15. Specialized experience in professional paper conservation is required. This includes the examination, analysis, and treatment of works of art on paper. Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates. Applicants must describe their possession of each of these factors separately in a one to two page supplement to their application. Failure to provide a detailed description of relevant experience/education will automatically disqualify the candidate from employment consideration. Major Evaluation Factors 1. Skill in performing treatment procedures involved in the restoration and maintenance of works of art on paper including mending, filling major losses, humidification methods, drying techniques and consolidation of flaking paint (Selective Factor) 2. Knowledge of environmental factors associated with works of art on paper such as recommended methods of storage, handling, and illumination levels (Selective Factor) 3. Skill in performing non-destructive examination and material analysis of works of art on paper utilizing ultra violet and infrared light, beta radiography, energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence, spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, and scanning electron microscopy (Selective Factor) 4. Knowledge of the history of art, especially Western art from the 15th century to the present (Selective Factor) 5.
