Conservator The Mariners' Museum USS Monitor project Newport News, VA The Mariners' Museum seeks a highly motivated and experienced conservator to join the USS Monitor project. The conservator will work closely with the Monitor conservation team, archaeologists, and others at the museum to research, treat, and care for over 250 tons of artifacts recently recovered from the Monitor shipwreck site. Responsibilities include: * Research, documentation, planning, and carrying out treatment and stabilization procedures for large-scale iron composite artifacts, such as the Monitor's gun turret, steam engine, and cannon. * Examination, documentation, treatment of waterlogged organic artifacts, such as wood, leather, textile, and rubber. * Care of treated artifacts on display and in storage. * Participation in collaborative conservation research projects with other institutions and universities. * Preparation for new laboratory facility scheduled to open in 2006. Candidates should have a degree from a recognized graduate conservation program (or the equivalent) and at least two years specialized experience in the conservation of waterlogged archaeological materials. Applicants with strong analytical skills and a chemistry background are desired. Physical demands include climbing up and down ladders, lifting up to 50lbs., and ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
