The Northeast Document Conservation Center is pleased to announce its fall series of preservation workshops. All workshops will be held at the Center's headquarters in Andover, MA. Cost: $140.00. Basic Book Repair Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Instructor: Lori Foley, Director of Field Service, NEDCC This course is designed to provide information about managing a book repair program and hands-on experience in basic book and paper repair techniques for general library collections. The place of book repair within a larger preservation program will be discussed, along with selection and treatment decision-making, appropriate materials for book repair, and setting up in-house capabilities. In the hands-on component, participants will learn to: * Mend tears using a variety of techniques * Tighten loose hinges * Tip in and hinge in loose or replacement pages This workshop is designed for staff who perform book repair and/or supervisors of book repair units for general collections. This workshop will *not* cover techniques for the repair of research collections or materials that are rare, special, or archival. Class size is limited to 20 students. Identification and Care of Photographs Wednesday, October 5, 2005 Instructor: Monique C. Fischer, Senior Photograph Conservator, NEDCC This workshop, an introduction to the preservation of photographs, will focus on historical photographic prints, including their identification, deterioration, and conservation. Participants will learn to recognize various photographic formats and will study the preservation problems associated with each format type. The workshop will culminate with a discussion of storage concerns and an examination of photographs brought in by participants. This workshop is designed for those who are responsible for the care and use of photographic collections and is also informative for people who wish to preserve their personal photographs. Class size is limited to 25 students. Introduction to Digitization Thursday, October 6, 2005 Instructor: David Green, Principal, Knowledge Culture Consulting This course will give newcomers the tools they need to best position their institution in the evolving digital ecology. What are the key questions to be asked throughout the process of digitizing cultural material? Discover the ways to make resources most visible, useful, and sustainable for a wide universe of potential users. The course will cover: * Project planning * Strategies for selecting material * The role of rights issues and rights management * Digital capture in several media * Preservation issues * Opportunities and keys for successful collaboration * How your digital assets will be managed and sustained over time This workshop is designed for decision makers in all cultural heritage institutions, and is not designed to recommend specific equipment or software options. Class size is limited to 40 people. Holdings Maintenance Wednesday, October 19, 2005 Instructor: Aimee Primeaux, Field Service Representative, NEDCC Holdings maintenance--simple procedures that can prolong the life of records--is essential to any preservation program. These actions, such as upgrading boxes and folders and removing metal fasteners, can be incorporated into the daily work of an institution's staff. This workshop will examine ways to implement a successful holdings maintenance program at minimal cost. Topics will include: * Levels of collections care * Nature of materials and causes of deterioration * Storage and handling options * Procedures involved in holdings maintenance * Selection for preservation This course is designed for staff and volunteers who are involved in archival activities and would like an introduction to preservation issues and maintenance procedures. Class size is limited to 25 people. Basic Paper Repair Thursday, October 20, 2005 Instructor: Christopher Sokolowski, Assistant Paper Conservator, NEDCC This course will introduce participants to the basic procedures of paper conservation and their place in a comprehensive preservation program. The session will cover the nature of paper and will describe responsible solutions to common problems of unbound materials such as prints, drawings, maps, and documents. Participants will be given hands-on experience with: * Handling * Surface cleaning * Mending * Flattening * Encapsulation Popular repair techniques to avoid will be discussed, and a materials and suppliers list will be provided. This workshop is designed for staff working with manuscript collections and other unbound paper. This workshop may also be pertinent to people concerned with their own family papers. Class size is limited to 20 people.
