Paper Conservator, GS level 9 Department of the Army, Military History Institute The Collections Management Division of the US Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania seeks an experienced paper conservator. Candidate will be the first paper conservator for the US Army, establishing the conservation program for holdings of more than 13 million archives, rare books and manuscripts, photographs, audio-visual materials, maps, historic documents, and works of art on paper. Holdings include significant materials from the Civil War, WWI and WWII. The focus of the first two years of employment is to write policy and procedures for an expanding conservation mission and to execute a random sampling survey of the paper collection. This may include occasional supervision of interns and staff. Candidate will identify materials for conservation and arrange government contracts for outsourcing conservation work in accordance to Army and government regulations. Candidate will advise on handling techniques, exhibition guidelines, offer workshops to staff, support the environmental monitoring program and the IPM program. Identification, ordering of supplies, and execution of remedial and stabilization treatments as necessary in a limited capacity will be required. This is an opportunity to join on the ground-floor level of a rapidly growing organization to serve the public and to 'tell the Army story, one soldier at a time.' This is a rural area of Pennsylvania (with a low cost of living) that will grow in the next few years into a major museum and research campus behind the US Army War College. Carlisle is 15 minutes west of the state capital Harrisburg, and a half-hour north of historic Gettysburg. Candidate is required to be a US Citizen, hold a Master's degree in conservation or 2 years equivalent experience, and have demonstrated strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. A high level of skill in paper conservation treatment techniques and general conservation knowledge is required for this demanding position.
