Colloquium and Symposium on Mural Paintings of the Silk Road: Cultural Exchanges between East and West 29th International Symposium on the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, Tokyo, Japan 24-26 January, 28 January, 2006 The Japan Center for International Cooperation in Conservation (JCICC) is engaged in a project for the conservation of mural paintings found in the Bamiyan valley. As part of these efforts, tandem work in research relating to the mural paintings of the Central Asia, particularly in the region surrounding Afghanistan, has also been initiated. This International Research Conference aims at providing a forum for sharing knowledge on mural paintings and their different interpretations within art history as well as in other related areas. Moreover, this event is intended to also serve an opportunity for developing discourse so as to surmount those theories based on a simplified opposition between eastern and western influences on the techniques, materials, motifs and patterns found in mural paintings, all reflecting the combinations of numerous cultures that once flourished along the Silk Road. Reports supplied by the different countries on current issues and case studies on the mural painting conservation and preservation will constitute the basis for continuous discussion. There will be a 3-day round-table colloquium and a 1-day symposium. Both conferences will be held in Japanese and English. Participation fees include reception and materials, and will be set by early December 2005. Requests for information and registration should be submitted no later than December 5, 2005.
