Slavic Culture and History Microfilming Project Coordinator Preservation Division Columbia University Libraries The Project Coordinator has primary responsibility for managing a two-year microfilming preservation project, including planning, supervising staff, coordinating library and vendor activities, and monitoring budgets and production statistics. Duties include: developing procedures and workflows; hiring and supervising project staff who perform identification of brittle volumes, bibliographic and circulation procedures, quality control inspection of microfilm, and disposition of filmed volumes and microfilm; coordinating the work of external vendors contracted with for preparation, bibliographic control, and microfilming to maintain productivity and ensure that proper standards and procedures are followed; monitoring budgets, maintaining statistics and preparing reports. The Project Coordinator reports to the Director for Preservation. The fourth phase of the NEH-funded Slavic Culture and History Microfilming Project will preserve 5,175 brittle monograph and serial volumes dealing with the politics, economy, society, and history of nineteenth-century Russia and Eastern Europe, the Russian Revolutionary period, and the period of Soviet dominance. Requirements: In addition to an accredited MLS with coursework in preservation and/or equivalent training, minimum one year's work experience in preservation. Aptitude for analytical work and strong organizational skills as demonstrated through previous relevant experience; knowledge of preservation microfilming policies and procedures; knowledge of bibliographic control policies and procedures for preservation reproductions; ability to work with staff at all levels in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; knowledge of one or more foreign language. Preferred qualifications include: knowledge of Russian or another Slavic language; previous supervisory experience; knowledge of MS Access and MS Excel or similar database software and spreadsheets, cost modeling, management statistics, and/or budgeting; experience with technical processing in a large library environment.
