The Head of Conservation has primary responsibility for leadership,
technical direction, and management of the Libraries' comprehensive
conservation program for special and general library collections.
Duties include:  administering the Conservation Laboratory special
materials unit and general collection repair unit; collaborating
with the Digital and Preservation Divisions, curators, Facilities,
and librarians to develop policies and procedures involving the
preservation of books and paper-based artifacts in original form;
performing sophisticated conservation treatments on all types of
rare and valuable ancient, medieval, and modern bound and loose
library materials (primarily paper-based) according to current
professional conservation ethics and treatment procedures;
coordinating the disaster recovery and environmental monitoring
programs; assisting with exhibitions and loans; participating in
planning for grant-funded projects; fund raising; and other related
activities.  The Head of Conservation reports to the Director for
Preservation.

Rare and special materials treated in Conservation are drawn
primarily from the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Avery
Architecture and Art History special collections, and the Starr East
Asian Library special collections.

Requirements: graduate degree in conservation of books and library
materials, and/or equivalent training and experience (e.g. formal
apprenticeship); minimum five years post-internship professional
conservation experience with rare and special materials, preferably
in a research library; knowledge of current conservation theory and
ethics, chemistry, environmental monitoring, and history of the
book.  Demonstrated skills with a wide variety of analytical and
treatment tools and techniques.  Supervisory experience.  Ability to
work effectively independently and as a member of a team; strong
organizational and project management skills; excellent oral and
written communication skills.  Desirable:  knowledge of Microsoft
Access or similar databases, Climate Notebook or similar datalogger
software, and digital photography and file management for treatment
documentation.

The salary for this PC II position is commensurate with experience.
