Audio-Visual Media Conservator (NL 1810) Alexander Turnbull Library National Library of New Zealand Wellington, New Zealand Salary: NZ$44,386-52,219 Applications close: 2 December 2005 The National Library of NZ is looking for an experienced audio-visual media conservator to join our team of 6 other conservators in the paper, archives, sound, video and photograph speciality areas, as well as technical support staff. The Audio-Visual Conservator works closely with the Senior Sound Conservator and is responsible for projects involving the audiovisual collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library, which include: * The Oral History Centre containing over 12,000 hours of historic recordings on discs, reels, cassette tapes and video format. * The Archive of NZ Music with extensive collections of music sound recordings. * Extensive holdings of published audiovisual media in the NZ and Pacific Collections. The full range of activities include: * Providing specialist conservation services for audiovisual media collections including both analogue and digital audio and video, and related media. This includes stabilisation and restoration treatment, preservation copying, surveys and condition reports, materials testing, and special packaging. * Operating and contributing to the ongoing development of the Library's Quadriga, OMS, Tapuhi and other computer-based preservation, copying and cataloguing systems. * Providing technical assistance for audiovisual recording programmes and projects including live events, and for exhibition and loan support and preparation. * Contributing to the development of the audiovisual conservation studios, and the other conservation laboratories and facilities and programmes * Training and supervision of technicians, contract workers and interns. * Providing advice and technical assistance to support the ongoing development of the National Digital Heritage Archives and other Library digital initiatives. * Participation in disaster planning and salvage programs and projects. The person we are looking for in this position should have: * At least 2 years of professional conservation practice after training, preferably in the library/archives sector. * Specific professional training and experience in the conservation of audiovisual materials and related media formats, particularly sound media, including conservation theory and materials science. * Familiarity with the preparation of audiovisual media for preservation and access copying using computer based software systems, preferably Quadriga. * An understanding of and experience in project management. * Enjoyment of the team approach to working relationships. * Good written and oral communication skills in English.
