Subject: Positions at Pennsylvania Heritage Society
Paper conservation professionals Beginning in early 2006, The Pennsylvania Heritage Society, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, will be undertake a three-year project to treat and conserve more than 2,500 original Pennsylvania Civil War Muster-Out Rolls among the holdings in the Pennsylvania State Archives. The project is funded by a federal SAT grant and the Pennsylvania Legislature. To facilitate the conservation of these documents, The Pennsylvania Heritage Society is seeking to hire two full-time (37.5 hours per week) conservation professionals for the duration of the project. This is a skilled position requiring knowledge and ability to perform basic conservation treatments, such as cleaning, mending, flattening, and encapsulation. Preference will be given to applicants with a Master's Degree in document conservation from an accredited academic program. Those nearing completion of program will also be given consideration. In addition to the basic conservation duties, the work will include creating and maintaining databases to document all project treatments; transporting the more severely damaged documents to the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia, and working closely with their staff. The persons selected will also be responsible for training, managing, and working with student interns and volunteers during the course of the project. The candidates must be in good health and be able to lift up to forty pounds, and stand for long periods of time. These employees are expected to work with minimal supervision throughout the project. The project will be based at the Pennsylvania State Archives, 350 North Street, Harrisburg, PA 17120. Overall supervision for the project will be provided by Linda A. Ries, Head, Archives CORE Services Section, with assistance from Richard Saylor, Project Archivist. The starting salary is commensurate with experience and will include an annual increase of 3%. Normal work hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm, except state holidays. Applications must be received by December 5, 2005.
