Position Information: Full-Time Permanent
Duty Location: 1 vacancy - St. Louis Metro area, MO
Key Requirements: Background and/or Security Investigation required.

Serves as assistant to the Sr. Preservation Specialist. as well as a
team member with responsibility for leading a full range of projects
concerned with the preservation and reproduction of primarily
paper-based archival records. Proposes appropriate preservation and
holdings maintenance procedures and guidelines for approval by the
senior Preservation Specialist.  Executes treatments, performing a
variety of analytical techniques to identify and/or determine
stability or solvent interaction, condition of pigments, inks,
media, support and other materials.  Performs treatment tasks
carried out by lower graded employees as well as consolidation and
stabilization of media, appropriate non-aqueous (solvent)
treatments, leaf cast and pulp mending, lining, encapsulation, and
matting/display/storage of fragile and vulnerable material. Examines
materials to determine their condition, prepares written and
photographic documentation of condition, and prepares written
treatment proposals for records.  Provides technical training and
guidance to lower-graded employees, assisting with assignments and
schedules and reporting problems and successes to Sr. Preservation
Specialist.  Maintains databases documenting project progress and
production.  Prepares written treatment and statistical reports for
review by senior Preservation Specialist.  Conducts condition
surveys of holdings, which will be used to determine preservation
priorities and work schedules.  Performs other preservation related
duties such as teaching, public outreach and tours, disaster
recovery efforts, archival re-housing (planning and implementation),
development of specifications for archival supplies, preservation
supply/equipment inventory and ordering, assisting with preservation
planning, environmental monitoring, and assisting with the
preparation and monitoring of archival records for possible
exhibitions and loans.

You may qualify for the GS-9 level if you have a master's degree or
2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education
leading to such a degree that has demonstrated the knowledge,
skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. To
be considered for this position from Federal Service, you must have
one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-7
level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience
which shows that you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to
perform the duties of this position successfully--generally obtained
from having worked in a position similar to the position being
filled.
