Subject: Amelia Pelaez
I am working on a painting on canvas by Cuban artist Amelia Pelaez rom 1946. The surface has a black coating overall, which is readily soluble in white spirits, revealing the bright colors of the paint layer underneath. The surface does not appear to be varnished. I would be interested to know whether anyone has encountered this type of coating in works by the artist, or by other Cuban works of this time, applied either as part of the artist's technique, or as a later application.
