Conservator USS Monitor Project The Mariners' Museum The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced candidate for the position of Conservator. This is a full-time, full-benefits position. The successful candidate will report to the Chief Conservator and will work directly with the Monitor Lead Conservator and other staff to treat artifacts recovered from the ironclad USS Monitor. The primary responsibility is to develop and implement the documentation and treatment of one of the large artifacts recovered from the Monitor, such as the engine, turret, and/or condenser. The successful candidate will be expected to follow established conservation procedures; participate in collaborative research projects that involve evaluating current treatments and developing new ones and examining the state of deterioration of the artifacts at hand; maintain thorough documentation of treatments; examine, evaluate, and treat artifacts; make recommendations for proper storage and exhibition of treated artifacts; assist with installation of artifacts in exhibits; observe safe laboratory procedures; and assist with laboratory upkeep. Experience with metal objects and organic materials from a marine environment required. Advanced degree in conservation and a minimum of two years experience in conservation of artifacts from a marine environment required.
