Collections Conservator Baker Library Harvard Business School Reporting to the Director of Historical Collections, the Collections Conservator for Baker Library is fully accountable for the development, implementation, and daily management of the Baker Library Preservation/Conservation Program, ensuring the longevity and usability of Baker Library's extensive collections. Manages the recently constructed Conservation Laboratory, a facility for treating archival, manuscript and print materials held in the Baker Library historical and general collections. Develops and manages annual Conservation/Preservation program budget. Has overall responsibility for the physical care and treatment of a wide range of library materials. In consultation with the Director of Historical Collections, sets collection conservation priorities. Hires, trains, and supervises one FTE technician and other project and contract staff.. Supervises all contracts for conservation services on a project-related, as needed basis. Plans and directs work flow, and monitors quality and productivity. Develops and implements collections care policies and guidelines for Baker Library and for the management of conservation projects. Collaborates with special collections conservators in Harvard University Library's Weissman Preservation Center (WPC) to survey and identify special collections material for treatment in the WPC Laboratory. Performs a broad range of conservation treatments on materials in the Historical Collections and general collections materials that require complex treatments. Develops and evaluates new treatment procedures. Provides technical advice regarding handling and storage of library materials. Supervises the preparation of materials for exhibition, preservation microfilming, and digitization. Monitors environmental conditions in Baker Library and works with HBS Operations to resolve issues that arise. Leads the Baker Library Collection Emergency Response Team, including organizing and implementing disaster recovery efforts. Maintains current awareness of conservation principles and practices as they apply to library and archival materials Required/Preferred Education, Experience, Skills: ALA-accredited MLS with advanced training and/or education in conservation. minimum of four years of conservation experience, with demonstrated excellence performing complex treatments involving a broad range of research library materials. Knowledge of the history of books and papermaking, and the nature and causes of book and paper deterioration. Strong organizational and management skills, including demonstrated ability to establish priorities and achieve goals, train, supervise, motivate, and evaluate staff, encourage and support team work and staff development, and plan, organize, and direct work flow. Ability to initiate and adapt to change, to analyze and solve complex problems, and to be flexible and work collaboratively. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to prepare reports and procedural documentation. The collections include approximately 600,000 printed volumes, 4,000 working papers, 186,000 annual reports, over 1 million microform items, 24,000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts, and 31,000 photographs. Baker Library holds one of the preeminent collections of historical materials on business and economic history and philosophy in the world. Major collections are the Business Manuscripts Collection, which includes approximately 1,400 collections dating from the fifteenth century to the current day; the Kress Collection of Business and Economics, rare books, broadsides and pamphlets from the sixteenth century to 1850; and the extensive holdings of the Harvard Business School Archives. The Baker Old Class Collection, approximately 300,000 volumes, is a particularly valuable resource for tracing the development and growth of American business and industry from the late nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century. The rich holdings include trade publications, government documents, corporate histories and publications, and business directories.
