Head of Technical Studies Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education The Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE) is seeking a Head of Technical Studies. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished scientist with a demonstrated background in art history, connoisseurship, and/or art conservation. The incumbent will conduct, manage, and guide primary research and technical studies on works of art, artifacts, and collections, or related materials, using appropriate scientific methodologies, to further knowledge of the history, connoisseurship, and conservation of these works and, where necessary, to verify their authenticity or provenance. The incumbent will provide leadership to the technical studies group, supervising a staff of conservation scientists and technicians and guiding research fellows, interns, and volunteers. The successful applicant should possess a record of achievement in science using state-of-the-art instrumentation and in (art) historical materials, connoisseurship, and/or art conservation, and supervisory experience at a level that includes conducting, managing, and guiding research. SCMRE is a scientific research center of the Smithsonian Institution with the mission to increase and disseminate scientific knowledge that improves preservation and conservation of museum collections and related material, with an emphasis on the collections of the Smithsonian Institution's museums.
