History and Use of Medieval Pigments and Inks Instructor: Cheryl Porter Registration fee: Full Workshop: $450/ $400 (AIC and GBW members discounted) Workshop limited to 10 participants Lecture: $ 20/$15 (AIC GBW discount) per Lecture or $ 75 for Lecture Series (No limits) Registration deadline: April 1, 2006 The Sheridan Libraries Preservation Department will host a five day-workshop on the History and Use of Medieval Pigments and Inks. A combination of morning lecture and afternoon laboratory work, participants will learn historical recipes, methods of manufacture, chemical and physical properties of pigments and the media, trade routes, their costs and their iconographic importance. Various methods for identifying pigments will be discussed. Afternoon sessions will be devoted to the preparation of samples of colorants discussed in the morning, methods for taking samples from original manuscripts, and practical methods for consolidating flaking and friable pigments. Day 1: Inks: Sepia, Iron Gall and Carbon Day 2: The Medieval Palette Day 3: The Medieval Blues Day 4: Organic Colors: Making and Use of Lake Colors Day 5: Pigments and Conservation Issues: Identification and consolidation Internationally recognized researcher and lecturer in medieval pigments, Cheryl Porter was trained as a book and paper conservator at Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts, London, England. After graduating, she worked with the Paintings Analysis Unit at University College London. It was there that she began her work using Laser Raman Spectroscopy to analyze pigments in manuscripts. Ms. Porter has published and lectured widely throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Australia. Since 1988, she and Nicolas Barker organized and coordinated the restoration of the Cardinal Barbarigo Seminary Library in Montefiascone, a walled medieval city 90 miles north of Rome. In 1994, Cheryl Porter set up the Montefiascone Library Conservation Project where each summer conservators, archivists, art historians, librarians, and others interested in the history and the structure of the book meet to participate in classes held within the city walls <URL:http://www.monteproject.com>.
