Subject: Historic floor coverings
Chris Wenzel asked about possible coverings to protect a beautiful and historic parquet floor. The National Trust at Tyntesfiedl have come up with a solution to protect a similarly beautiful and historic decorative tiled floor--a synthetic floor covering (like a vinyl or linoleum sheet) which is decorated with a photographic reproduction of the floor. From a short distance it is indistinguishable from the original and most people do not even notice the slightly different feel underfoot. It gives the visual effect of walking on the original floor, does not cause much physical disruption (it is quite thin) and protects the original surface from abrasion and dirt. I would suggest asking the National Trust about the supplier and method of developing the floor, as well as any interleaving material laid on the original surface.
