Collections Conservator Harvard College Library Two year term appointment Duties and Responsibilities: The Conservator works in the Collections Conservation Laboratory in Widener Library under the supervision of the Head of Conservation Services and in conjunction with the Collections Conservator for Widener Library. The Conservator treats a range of books and other library materials; participates in programs that ensure the longevity and usability of Harvard College Library’s general research collection; specifies treatment for a range of library materials (primarily 19th through 21st century books); participates in surveys, develops web based publications, and conducts other projects as a member of the Conservation Services management team; assists conservation efforts in other HCL libraries, including training staff and working in off site labs; contributes to the maintenance of vendor files; serves on the Library Collections Emergency Team [LCET]; may supervise support staff positions and other temporary and less than half time positions. Education and/or Experience: Required: MLIS. Advanced training in conservation acquired through formal graduate studies or a combination of apprenticeship, advanced courses, and internships. Demonstrated excellence performing conservation treatments in a production setting. Broad general knowledge of library preservation, including reformatting, environmental control, disaster preparedness and response, and bibliographic control as it relates to preservation. Knowledge of the history of the book, the history and techniques of bookbinding and papermaking, and the history of manufacture of other library materials. Knowledge of the nature and causes of book and paper deterioration. Working knowledge of chemistry as it applies to library materials.
