New Appointments in the Preservation Directorate, Library of Congress Dianne van der Reyden has been selected as Director of Preservation at the Library of Congress, overseeing the Preservation Directorate's Reformatting, Conservation, Binding and Collections Care, and Preservation Research and Testing Divisions. Formerly she served as Acting Director and Chief of the Conservation Division, following twenty years as a conservator at the Smithsonian Institution, working with library and archives collections, overseeing two different laboratories during that period, and publishing numerous articles. She holds a Masters of Art History and two Certificates in Conservation. Ms. van der Reyden is pleased to announce the selection of new Chiefs for three of the Directorate's four Divisions. Joining the Directorate's Special Projects Officer, Ken Harris, and the Chief of the Preservation Reformatting Division, Mark Sweeney, the new Preservation Directorate team will consist of the following: Dr. Nels Olson, Chief of the Preservation Research and Testing Division. Dr. Olson comes from the biotechnology field, having been Staff Scientist at Molecular Dynamics and the Senior Staff Scientist and Associate Director for Systems Analysis and Integration at Illumina, where he oversaw forensic analysis, quality assurance, and research and development. He was an engineer before obtaining his doctorate in organic synthesis and analytical chemistry. Following that he was a Fulbright fellow and had occasion to work on preservation projects abroad. He has authored several patents. Diane Vogt-O'Connor, Chief of the Conservation Division. Ms Vogt-O'Connor's former job experiences include overseeing conservators and conservation of special collections at the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Park Service and the Smithsonian Institution. She has authored several works on preservation, as well as over two-dozen Conserv-o-Grams on topics including photographic materials, rare books and digital projects. She holds two double masters degrees: a Masters of Library Science and Archives, and of Art History and Museology. Jeanne Drewes, Chief of the Binding and Collections Care Division. Ms Drewes has overseen collection care and binding at Michigan State University and Johns Hopkins, supervising binders, vendors, and trainees. She has prepared many publications and presentations on binding and collections care, including standards, trends in alkaline paper, risk management, and digital preservation. She is a trained bookbinder who was awarded a preservation internship by the Mellon Foundation, following completion her Masters of Library Science.
