Library Assistant VI (Conservation Technician) Historical Collections, Baker Library Harvard Business School Full-time, grade 53 HUCTW, overtime-eligible Duties and Responsibilities: Follows established treatment procedures and production benchmarks to contribute to the preservation of the BL collections. Evaluates damaged/deteriorated materials and perform appropriate treatments using est. procedures and meeting production benchmarks. Performs intermediate/advanced conservation of Circulating/Special Collections, including repairing and rebinding books; cleaning, washing, de-acidifying, flattening, and mending paper; constructing custom enclosures; constructing exhibition mats, mounts, and cradles. Uses est. techniques that promote productivity and demonstrates ongoing efforts to increase productivity. Participates in condition surveys. Oversees routine operations in Conservation Lab when Conservator is not present. Trains/provides guidance to student and pt workers. Organizes work flow for circulating collections repair work; coordinates with Access Services staff to review materials for conservation, rehousing, and rebinding activities. Collaborates with Historical Collections staff in planning projects. Assists in responses to emergencies involving library materials. Performs routine laboratory maintenance procedures. Provides tech. support for prep. of materials for exhibition/digitization. Other duties as required. Required Education, Experience and Skills: High school diploma or equivalent with formal or on-the-job training in bookbinding/book conservation required. College degree preferred. Must be able to perform repetitive work accurately with attention to details, and have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to make well-informed decisions regarding complex conservation treatment. Understanding of chemical/physical causes of deterioration in library materials. Ability to initiate and adapt to change and to be flexible and work collaboratively. Ability to read/interpret documents such as bibliographic data. Excellent communication/interpersonal skills required Experience with MS Windows-based software required. Ability to work productively in a team environment with minimal supervision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in a busy laboratory environment and is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is routinely required to stand for periods of time and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, operate heavy equipment (cutters, presses, milling machine), climb ladders, use sharp tools (knives, scalpels), and fume hood (for spray de-acidification, application of light solvents, mold removal). Job involves exposure to dust and mold. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.
