Conservator, Works on Paper Art Gallery of Ontario Regular Full Time position. The Art Gallery of Ontario is seeking a highly skilled Conservator of works on paper to be part of Transformation AGO, an institution wide expansion and renovation project designed by Frank Gehry opening mid-2008. AGO collections include 52,000 paper-based works of art from the Western tradition of fine art, from Medieval manuscripts and miniatures to a wide range of contemporary art materials. Canadian art is a significant focus for the AGO; the international collection of photography is large and expanding; and the paper conservators are also responsible for library and archival materials. The conservator's work is driven by active loans, acquisitions and exhibition programs, as well as care of the permanent collections. The paper lab is in transition, and the incumbent will have a role in developing new approaches to doing business. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Collections and Head of Conservation, this position is responsible for prolonging the physical and aesthetic life of works of art through documentation, preventive care, conservation treatment, research and education. This position is also responsible for promoting and advocating the preservation of works in the collection or in the temporary custody of the Gallery. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing advice and expertise concerning the aesthetic, conceptual and physical characteristics of works of art. Our ideal candidate will have a Masters degree in Conservation from a recognized University or College, plus five (5) years related experience with works on paper, in an art museum, or a combination of both. In addition, the candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team, possess an excellent knowledge of conservation principles, practices, materials, and techniques, in order to perform superior and confident treatments, Excellent knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations and practices, and the "Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice" of the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural Property (CAC) and of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC) is required.
