The Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art seeks a conservator for Furniture and Wooden Objects. The Assistant/Associate Conservator will be given independent responsibilities, concentrating on the care, treatment, and research of furniture and wooden objects in several curatorial departments, including those of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, Medieval Art, Asian Art, as well as Nineteenth Century, Modern and Contemporary Art. The conservator will help with the research and treatment for the purpose of acquisitions, loans, and exhibitions. In the Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation, the Assistant/Associate Conservator will work closely with three fellow furniture conservators, an upholstery conservator and a gilding conservator, and alongside 25 conservators with other specialties. The applicant is expected to have experience in the examination and treatment of furniture and wooden objects from different cultures and time periods. Experience in the examination and treatment of both polychrome wood surfaces and bio-deteriorated wood would be beneficial, while knowledge of microscopic wood identification would be preferable. Required qualifications include excellent analytical and organizational skills, demonstrable experience with woodworking tools, as well as proficiency in computer documentation and digital photography. Candidates must have a degree from a recognized graduate conservation program (or the equivalent), and several years of professional experience as a conservator of furniture and wooden objects, preferably in a museum context.
