Subject: Conference BigStuff 2007
BigStuff 2007 11-14 September 2007 Bochum and Dortmund Following the very successful conference, BigStuff 2004, in Australia, a sequel--BigStuff 2007--will be given in the Ruhr Basin (Ruhrgebiet), a classic, highly-industrialized coal and steel region in Germany. The organizer is the German Mining Museum (Deutsche Bergbau Museum) in Bochum, in partnership with the Westfalian Museum of Industry (Westfalischen Industriemuseum) in Dortmund. BigStuff 2007 is supported by: Verband der Restauratoren (VDR), Fachgruppe Technisches Kulturgut Vereinigung der Landesdenkmalpfleger in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (VdL), Arbeitsgruppe Industriedenkmalpflege Deutscher Museumsbund (DMB); Fachgruppe Technikhistorische Museen The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) Deutschland International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Big Stuff 2007 will take place 11-14 September 2007 in the German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum) in Bochum and the Westfalian Museum of Industry (Westfalisches Industriemuseum) in Dortmund. The conference is international in scope; the conference language will be English. The conference is aimed at all of those who are involved with the preservation of large industrial heritage objects. The BigStuff conference will be devoted to the "monument-appropriate" preservation and interaction with large objects and infrastructure of industry and technology. At the same time, there will be a major focus on difficult conservation conditions pertaining to industrial objects, in particular those in "open air sites" (e.g., pit head frames, blast furnaces, etc.). Moreover, we are interested in a global, interdisciplinary approach--not only "the best formula" for a surface treatment, but also the following issues: Tailoring our understanding of large projects: action planning for large industrial sites Site management--on risks and chances Repair and conservation: irreconcilable opponents? Entrusted to our care: what does it mean? Pathways through heritage: necessary and encumbering "Restored to working glory"--to work or not to work? Conservation of "buried treasure": gathering and preserving technical, working knowledge from past generations Vocational training on-the-job? the education of interpreters With a program that includes guest lectures devoted to areas of specialized expertise, poster presentations, excursions, workshops and a closing group discussion, BigStuff 2007 should be of interest to the greatest possible number of participants. In addition, reports from the different participating countries will provide an overview of global developments in this field. The international focus of the conference will be supported by a Scientific Committee made up of the world's leading experts.
