Call for Papers Third International Architectural Paint Research Conference 2008 The Third International Architectural Paint Research Conference is sending out a call for papers and posters for the January 17-19, 2008 conference to be held in New York City hosted by the Historic Preservation Department in the School of Architecture at Columbia University. In addition to paint, we will be including relevant papers on the architectural use of stains, varnishes, glazes, gilding, and wallpaper. There will be five sessions covering the following topics: * Cultural Significance. The examination of finishes as a social, economic and cultural component of material culture. Papers can address issues such as color taste and history. * Paint Materials. This topic looks at paint materials and their development and is a history of technology session. * Health and Safety. This topic encompasses issues related to finishes which can include possible alternatives to historic finishes that no longer meet health and safety requirements or issues that arise in the recreating of historic finishes or handcrafted finishes. * Analytical and Instrumental Techniques. Papers should examine how various analytical and instrumental techniques are used in architectural finish research and standards for these techniques. * Practical Applications. Replicating, recreating and conserving historic finishes. Papers should address the context of the original finish and how the work is reproduced or conserved. All papers that discuss case studies should relate to one of the topics. Presenters are encouraged to demonstrate how the case study contributes to the field of architectural paint research by providing in-depth discussion of what was learned in the course of the study or project. Presentations are to be no longer than 30 minutes in length. Abstracts, presentations, and posters must be in English and in Word or PDF format. Abstracts for both papers and posters should be 250 to 300 words and must include the title, the name of the speaker or speakers, the address of the speaker and any affiliated institution, email address of the principal presenters and the one page resume for the speaker or speakers.
