Head of Preventive Conservation and Science Unit (BAND E) Historic Scotland You are invited to apply for this new post in Historic Scotland's Technical Conservation Research and Education Group (TCRE). You will be based at The Historic Scotland Conservation Centre (HSCC Division), currently at Stenhouse, Edinburgh, where you will play a key role in the establishment and development of the new Preventive Conservation and Science Unit (PCS). PCS has been set up within HSCC to develop a scientifically based research and advisory service in support of the wide-ranging stone and paint conservation treatments carried out by specialist staff and in conjunction with the research and technical conservation programme enabled by TCRE's Historic Scotland Conservation Bureau (HSCB). Leading a team of three, you will be an experienced scientist and manager with a sound knowledge of traditional building materials, notably stone, wood and metal. You will have a strong background in materials science with an in-depth knowledge of the causes and effects of material deterioration. You will have a higher degree in a scientific discipline related to conservation and be able to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in support of TCRE staff and their range of contacts. Your awareness of conservation issues and good communication skills will enable you to support HSCC's conservators in their technical analysis and problem-solving, in addition to participate in HSCB's research strategies at national and international level. You will have the experience and capability to build close links with other research institutions and represent TCRE's scientific interests in appropriate forums. In support of TCRE's wider objective you will play a major part in the development of the HSCC in-house service, utilising its exclusive archive and range of case work. The ability to drive is essential. Salary is performance related and will be in the Band E range UKP31,168 to UKP37,880 (pay award pending). This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.
