Position at Historic Scotland

From: Michael Pearce <michael.pearce>
Date: Thursday, November 2, 2006
Head of Preventive Conservation and Science Unit (BAND E)
Historic Scotland

You are invited to apply for this new post in Historic Scotland's
Technical Conservation Research and Education Group (TCRE). You will
be based at The Historic Scotland Conservation Centre (HSCC
Division), currently at Stenhouse, Edinburgh, where you will play a
key role in the establishment and development of the new Preventive
Conservation and Science Unit (PCS). PCS has been set up within HSCC
to develop a scientifically based research and advisory service in
support of the wide-ranging stone and paint conservation treatments
carried out by specialist staff and in conjunction with the research
and technical conservation programme enabled by TCRE's Historic
Scotland Conservation Bureau (HSCB).

Leading a team of three, you will be an experienced scientist and
manager with a sound knowledge of traditional building materials,
notably stone, wood and metal. You will have a strong background in
materials science with an in-depth knowledge of the causes and
effects of material deterioration. You will have a higher degree in
a scientific discipline related to conservation and be able to
demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in support of TCRE staff
and their range of contacts.

Your awareness of conservation issues and good communication skills
will enable you to support HSCC's conservators in their technical
analysis and problem-solving, in addition to participate in HSCB's
research strategies at national and international level. You will
have the experience and capability to build close links with other
research institutions and represent TCRE's scientific interests in
appropriate forums. In support of TCRE's wider objective you will
play a major part in the development of the HSCC in-house service,
utilising its exclusive archive and range of case work. The ability
to drive is essential.

Salary is performance related and will be in the Band E range
UKP31,168 to UKP37,880 (pay award pending). This is a permanent and
pensionable appointment.
