Our mission at Tate is to increase the public's knowledge,
understanding and appreciation of art, by displaying a collection of
some of the best modern and contemporary works of art the world has
to offer across our four galleries (Tate Britain and Tate Modern in
London, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives). Combined, our galleries
form one of the world's leading art institutions, enjoying a
national and international profile and reputation for excellence.

Our Conservation Department sits within the Collection and Programme
Services Division whose function is to make the Collection available
and accessible to the public. The Conservation Department is
responsible for the technical investigation, conservation and
restoration of works of art in the collection and in Tate's care.
Reporting to our Head of Conservation, the postholder will join us
as one of four Conservation Managers taking on the role of Lead
Conservator for our Paintings section as well as being line manager
for Frames and Conservation Technicians. In these roles the
successful applicant will lead and manage a team of over 20, at an
exciting time for the department as we plan the creation of new
conservation facilities within a Collection Centre aimed at
developing public access.

As well as prioritising and allocating a heavy programme schedule
within budget and being responsible for providing leadership and
guidance to ensure the delivery of conservation services in line
with Tate's overall aims and objectives, we'll want the postholder
to take on a much more strategic role too. He/she will get involved
in the forward planning of the conservation department including the
development of research projects, staff expertise and planning for
new facilities. A fundamental aspect of this position will be to
work towards greater public engagement with the aims and objectives
of the conservation profession.

The successful applicant will have extensive conservation experience
in painting conservation or equivalent, preferably within a large
institution, and be internationally recognised in his/her field of
expertise. He/she will be either accredited through the Professional
Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers (PACR) in the UK or be
willing to work towards accreditation within two years of
appointment. With a real ability to lead and motivate a team in
order to reach their full potential, he/she will also have
experience of programme/project planning.
