Workshops for Paper, Book and Photographic Conservators Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Workshops for Paper, Book and Photographic Conservators at York Minster Library Leafcasting Workshop Tutor: Stephen Allen ACR Wednesday 28 March 2007 9:30am - 4:30pm Cost: GBP125 including VAT The theory and practice of paper leafcasting will be covered with hands on opportunities to make paper infill repairs. Participants will learn how to make up colour matched pulp and use it to repair missing corners or worm holes. This is a particularly useful technique for repairing book pages as the method does not lead to an increase in page thickness. Techniques for repairing sheets with text on both sides will be demonstrated as well as the facility for casting sheets of toned repair paper for alternative repair methods. Lining Workshop Tutor: Richard Hawkes ACR Wednesday 2 May 2007, 9.30am to 4.30pm Cost: GBP125 including VAT This is a practical workshop, with hands on opportunities to practice and discuss a range of lining techniques for works on paper, both art and archives. As well as traditional lining techniques for Western papers, adaptations for problem media. large works and using linings to flatten and mount paper will be shown. Aqueous and non-aqueous adhesives will be used. Participants will make use of the studio's kari-bari board and practice some alternative flattening and drying methods. The Care of Glass Plate Negatives Tutor: Angels Arribas Thursday 3 May 2007 9:30am to 4:30pm Cost: GBP125 including VAT This one day course covers the principal practical issues regarding the preservation and conservation of glass plate negatives. The course will help those caring for these objects to identify the common processes, assess their condition, prioritise conservation treatments and implement initial preservation actions. Participants will receive a background to the commonest glass plate negative processes, their components and stability, and learn the main types of deterioration. On the practical side, the participant will be introduced to the first steps in the preservation of these photographic processes including handling, dry cleaning and storage procedures. Finally, participants will have an opportunity to discuss preservation needs in their own collection. This workshop is also suitable for archivists, curators and those caring for photographic collections.
