American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) presents Beyond The Proposal: Researching Potential Funders for Conservation An AIC Online web seminar in the Business and Management Practices for Conservators series. A key component is knowing how to identify and research prospective donors. Without this key step, you and your clients can waste a great deal of time writing proposals to the wrong funders. This hour-long seminar will help you narrow your search to the most likely donors and tailor your proposals to their specific interests. Who should participate? Conservators in private practice who wish to expand their business by helping clients get funding Conservators in institutions who are called upon to assist with fundraising for projects Administrators, conservation scientists, and other professionals who are seeking funding for conservation projects What will I learn? Basic fund raising research techniques How to identify donors and their giving potential The various sources of funding The hour-long session will include PowerPoint presentations, discussion, and question-and-answer sessions covering the following topics: The importance of having a funding plan Public and private sources of funding How and where to collect information on prospects About the instructor Susan Anne Mathisen is a practicing conservator who also has nearly ten years of fund raising experience. Her previous positions include those at the Morgan Library and Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. For seven years, she was the administrative conservator at the Conservation Center, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. It was in this capacity that she honed her fund raising skills and earned a certificate in fund raising management at NYU's Center for Philanthropy. Since leaving NYU, she has been Director of Development at the National Academy Museum of Fine Arts and is currently in the Development office of the American Academy in Rome. She still maintains her private textile conservation practice. How do I participate in this online seminar? Just before the start time, you will dial a toll-free number to receive the audio portion of the presentation. Using your own computer, you will also go to a special course website and login. You will view PowerPoint slides on your desktop browser and hear the presenter speaking over the phone connection. You will be able to ask questions by text or by phone, access readings and web resources, and respond to class polls. Do I need any special hardware, software, or downloads? No. All you need is a telephone and a computer with internet access. Before the date of the seminar, you will be sent login information, which will include a test page to confirm that your internet browser will be compatible with the course. How do I register? The fee for this course is $29 for AIC members, $59 for non-members. To register, complete and return the registration form, which is available on the AIC website or from the AIC office. The registration deadline is March 6, 2007. Participants will be accepted in order of receipt of paid registration. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is advised. About the series: "Researching Potential Funders for Conservation" is part of AIC's online education series, "Business and Management Practices for Conservators." Funded by The Getty Foundation, the series offers basic business skills with a focus on the requirements of the conservation community. Courses that are currently or soon to be offered include "Establishing a Conservation Practice," "Marketing" "Mitigating Risk: Contracts and Insurance," "Recordkeeping and Documentation," and "Lab Safety."
