This will include an examination of architectural drawings as
    case study objects.

Dr Aeli Roberts is principally an academic teaching conservation
science and practical skills to students specialising in the
conservation of works of art on paper. She currently lectures at
Camberwell College of Arts and UCL. Her PhD involved an
investigation into the treatment of watercolours and the
relationship of watercolour stability to washing method and
object composition. She is keen to use experimentation alongside
the treatment of real life objects, but recognises and considers
the problems that making suitable test material may generate.
Her current research interests include examining the possibility
of using an aqueous fixative on pencil drawings and inscriptions
prior to mechanical cleaning. The intention of the fixative is
that it would allow for the more even cleaning of an object
without the risk of media loss. The lecture gives an overview of
her research methodology and how this has been influenced by
what was learnt during the watercolour research and her findings
to date. She will also consider the implications of using a
novel treatment in the conservation of three mixed media
architectural drawings. The talk examines the decision-making
processes from the perspective of a conservation scientist who
    is also a practising conservator.

Some of the techniques and materials used in paper conservation
can be successfully applied to photographic conservation.
However, some techniques and materials can actually be harmful
and cause further problems. This talk will outline some of the
main similarities and differences between the two fields.

After qualifying in paper conservation at Camberwell School of
Art and Craft, Susie Clark ACR was the conservator for the BBC
Hulton Picture Library (now Getty Images). Since 1990 she has
been a freelance paper and photographic conservator working
primarily for institutions. In 1996 she won the MGC Jerwood
Conservation Award for Research and Innovation for her work on
    wet collodion positives.

The Book and Paper Group are delighted that John Purcell Paper
will sponsor drinks and food at this evening's lecture. John
Purcell supply conservation quality paper and board. Their
