Job Summary: The Conservation Technician assists the Conservation Head with achieving the goals of the Conservation Lab and Preservation Department. The incumbent performs a variety of conservation treatments (simple and complex) on circulating and non-circulating material, and works with a range of paper, cloth, and leather bindings. Additionally, this role assists with student supervision and other related duties as necessary. If requested, samples of conservation work should be available upon request. Specific Responsibilities: Performing a variety of conservation treatments (simple and complex) including work on a range of paper, cloth, and leather bindings from circulation and non-circulating collections. Working on text blocks and covers such as re-sewing, re-backing, paper repair, repairing existing covers, and constructing new covers. Binding structures will vary with the historical period. Participating in other treatments to include encapsulation, deacidification, and making boxes and wrappers. Specifying treatment for materials and inspecting completed work. Performing other duties as necessary to achieve the goals of the Conservation Lab and Preservation Department including surveys, disaster response, inventory, and exhibit preparation. Assisting in supervising students and monitoring workflow when Student Supervisor and Conservation Head are not available. Performing other related duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired. Demonstrated understanding of conservation principles. 2 years of experience in bookbinding or conservation work. Demonstrated ability to push/pull loaded book trucks. Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds. Proficiency in conservation treatments including full range of circulation collection repairs (re-backing, re-casing, pamphlet binding, drop spine box and wrapper construction, re-sewing paper repair, repair of leather bindings with tissue). Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in library conservation Previous experience in any of the following: Studio Art, Chemistry, History of Bookbinding, Bookbinding Structure, or Library Science Previous experience working with Voyager library catalog Previous experience with supervision and training in book repair Applications received by 30 March 2007 will get first consideration.
