Subject: New graduate program in preservation of information
For centuries, archivists have preserved the documents that record history. Now with the explosive growth in new forms of media, archival science is adapting to meet the challenge. The University of Michigan School of Information (SI) has added a new specialization in Preservation of Information to respond to the urgent need for expertise in preservation, digital curation, and Web archiving. "SI offers the greatest breadth of preservation management courses of any institution in the United States or Canada," says Associate Professor Elizabeth Yakel, coordinator of the new specialization. "Our faculty have extensive professional experience in this area and are among the top researchers in the field. Our program strengths include our strong focus on archival practice and digital technologies. And our home at the University of Michigan gives us access to a formidable set of preservation resources, labs, collections, and more." Graduates will be well-prepared for careers as data and digital curators, preservation officers and managers, Web archivists, digital collections managers, digital reformatting specialists, digital preservation project managers, and more. The specialization is one of nine the School offers--six of which are newly launched--that prepare students for careers in a broad range of long-established and newly emerging fields. "Our specializations give students more choice and more flexibility than ever before," says Judy Lawson, director of academic and career services. "They also respond to the needs of organizations in hot fields like social computing. Employers want graduates with a deep understanding of how to manage information and at the same time make it easily accessible to users. SI is staying ahead of the curve." **** Moderator's comments: See <URL:http://www.si.umich.edu/go> for information on the school's other programs The multidisciplinary School of Information has a rich history of innovative teaching and path-breaking research.
