Subject: Elizabeth Soutar Bookbinding Competition
Entries are invited for the National Library of Scotland's Elizabeth Soutar Bookbinding Competition 2007. The competition, which is sponsored by Mrs Elizabeth A Clark who lives in Moray, Scotland, is open to any resident of the member states of Europe and offers two prizes: Best Competition Entrant UKP1200 Best Student Entrant UKP600 A student is defined as any person receiving full-time training or education in bookbinding. Entrants will be eligible for only one prize. Competition entrants must submit a 'craft binding' using materials of their own choice. In addition to assessing the quality of the craft skills applied, the judges look, in particular, for originality and expression in the cover design. Entries should be a single example of craft binding, bound exclusively for this competition. Multiple volume entries are permissible where these constitute a single artistic entity and can therefore be judged as a composite entry. It is a condition of entry that, in the event of being awarded a prize, the winner will donate the bound volume to the National Library of Scotland, where it will be placed in the Library's collection of fine bindings. Participants must also be willing to lend their entries to the National Library of Scotland for a period of six months after the competition ends in order to allow an exhibition of entries to be held.
