Subject: Fellowship at National Gallery, London
Mellon Fellow in Digital Presentation of Technical and Conservation Information Fixed term appointment: 22 months Salary: UKP23,319 pa The National Gallery, which houses one of the finest collections of Western European paintings in the world, has a long tradition of presenting the results of the technical examination of paintings made by the members of the Conservation and Scientific Departments in collaboration with relevant curators. The Mellon Fellow would work on a pilot project to assemble a digital database of the technical material from the National Gallery's group of ten paintings by Raphael. On completion of this first stage, the project would lead to links to equivalent databases in other museums with Raphael holdings, and eventually to expansion to include more artists. This involves the initial gathering and digitisation of data on Raphael from a wide range of Gallery sources as well as participation in the database construction. It is intended that presentation and interpretation of the material is aimed simultaneously at professional colleagues in the conservation profession and the wider scholarly community, and, in a more simplified and interpreted form, at the general gallery visitor who might consult the material on the Gallery's information delivery systems. The Mellon Fellow will be supervised by a Senior Restorer in the Conservation Department and will work closely with members of the Conservation, Scientific and Curatorial Departments. You will also collaborate with colleagues the Digital Imaging section of the Scientific Department in the construction of the web-based database. On completion of the initial stages of the project they will develop contacts with other institutions with holdings of Raphael material with a view to expanding the database by links to other similarly constructed websites. We are looking for a well-qualified individual with relevant post-graduate or post-doctoral experience, ideally in paintings conservation or in conservation science. A high level of computer skills are essential and you should be prepared under instruction to develop a sophisticated understanding of the construction of image-based databases. You will produce explanatory text for the database appropriate for the different levels of interpretation and you will have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide range of individuals who may have varying levels of understanding of the field. Familiarity with art history and some knowledge of foreign languages would be a considerable benefit.
