The Science Museum is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced and
motivated objects conservator with engineering or metalworking
skills to join the Conservation Unit based at the South Kensington
site while the present job-holder is on a secondment to a different
project.

The post will provide the opportunity to work on the Science Museums
world class collections of working engineering and scientific
demonstration models.

Reporting to the Conservation Manager, London your main
responsibilities will be to maintain the working models on display
and to design and implement a maintenance schedule for those working
objects that do not have one in place. You will work with other
conservation staff to monitor the condition of objects in
exhibitions for deterioration. You will conserve objects for display
and loan, and advise on object acquisition and disposal. You will
work with other museum staff on projects providing conservation
advice. You will also be involved in projects ensuring the safe
management of hazards in museum collections.

You may be called on to supervise conservation students or interns
and train museum staff in collections care practice.

You should have a recognised qualification in conservation, with
proven practical experience working with composite objects in a
heritage environment. You have knowledge of museum procedures and
techniques involved in conservation and collections care. You are
competent in Word, Excel and either MIMSY XG or other collections
databases, a working knowledge of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements is
desirable.

We are looking for a self-motivated person with good interpersonal
and communication skills, who is able to work with minimal
supervision to tight deadlines.
