Conservation Scientist Historic Scotland Band D UKP25,622 UKP31,131 (pay award pending) (Ref: HSC/07/050) Based at The Historic Scotland Conservation Centre, currently at South Gyle, Edinburgh, you will play an important part in the 'Preventive Conservation and Science' Unit (PCS), to develop a high quality scientifically based research and advisory service in support of wide-ranging research activities. You will primarily be involved in conducting research into the traditional materials used in Scotland's built heritage stock, the performance and decay of traditional buildings and the factors that cause material deterioration. You will also explore remedial actions that can aid conservation. You will play a major part in the development of an in-house service and a network of external collaborative partners. Your research will inform scientists, conservators, practitioners and home-owners of best methods to maintain traditionally constructed buildings. Travel throughout Scotland will be required. You should have a higher degree in a scientific discipline related to building materials or conservation and the knowledge and skills to carry out research and analysis in material decay processes. You should be able to address a range of audiences and issues, and demonstrate experience of building and promoting collaborative research projects. Experience of X-ray diffraction, FT-IR or Raman Spectroscopy would be an advantage. You should have good communication skills, discretion and the ability to work without supervision, as well as part of a team.
