Conservator The British Library London, St Pancras Salary cUKP21,058 The British Library is one of the greatest research libraries in the world. Our modernisation programme ensures that we keep pace with other international libraries. We continue to set standards with our integrated management of the nation's digital and printed collection. The Collection Care department of the British Library which comprises some 200 staff is responsible for the preservation, conservation, storage and security of the collections. The British Library's collection of 150 million items is made up of items from across the centuries and across cultures. Working in a team of conservators within the Conservation section of Collection Care, you will be required to carry out conservation treatments to a wide range of library and archival materials which may include books, manuscripts, archives, maps, prints and drawings, illuminations on parchment and paper and photographs from a range of different cultures. You will be expected to work with minimal supervision and to have the skills and knowledge to plan and manage your work to ensure that production deadlines are met. You must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels, and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken. Minimum requirements for the post include recent practical hands-on experience in conservation, a degree in conservation studies or equivalent knowledge and skills sets, the ability to diagnose conservation problems and to develop options for the solutions of those problems. A high level of manual dexterity is required (with the ability to treat fragile and delicate materials), knowledge of materials chemistry and the properties, behaviours and interaction of a wide range of organic and inorganic materials and an understanding of the deterioration of materials associated with Library collections. You will also have knowledge of the ethics of conservation, and an ability to apply ethics to treatments of items in the context of a research collection that is accessed by readers and researchers.
