Book conservator for the Turkish Collection The Chester Beatty Library Dublin The Chester Beatty Library is pleased to offer a one-year contract in book conservation, focusing on the Library's Turkish Collection. The Turkish Collection consists of 162 manuscripts, mainly produced in Turkey and written in Ottoman Turkish or Persian, as well as a small number in Chagatay Turkish and produced in Western Iran. Many of these manuscripts are illustrated poetry and history texts, a large portion are un-illustrated, but beautifully illuminated religious texts, such as prayer books. The Collection includes several of the most important illustrated works in existence made for the Ottoman sultans of the 16th century. The Qur'an Collection comprises over 260 complete and fragmentary copies of the Qur'an, making it one of the largest and most important collections of Qur'ans outside the Middle East. It includes some of the earliest existing Qur'ans, those of the late 8th, 9th and 10th centuries. The Collection includes 46 Turkish Qur'ans, of the 13th to 18th centuries. We are looking for a book conservator for this one-year contract with a recognised qualification in conservation and a minimum of 3 years work-experience. Candidates should have proven experience of working on Islamic bindings and manuscripts. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Library's Conservation Manager but should be able to organise their own workload and work independently or as part of a team. The starting date for this position is flexible and dependant on finding the right candidate for the project.
