Collections Management/Preservation Officer The UCSD Libraries University of California, San Diego Application consideration begins June 30, 2007. Preferred appointment level: Associate Librarian IV - Librarian III with an approximate salary range of $54,744-$79,968 The Libraries of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) seek applications from highly motivated, creative and experienced library professional to join an enthusiastic staff in support of excellence in a research library of a rapidly growing highly ranked university. Responsibilities of the Position: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services, plans strategies and policies that cover collections care for all library materials, including print, media, and digital collections. Coordinates the preservation, digitization, and disaster preparedness programs for UCSD's collections, in consultation with collection managers and Digital Library Program staff. This position is also responsible for the Preservation Department of 3.5 FTE support staff, plus student assistants. Preservation operations include the bindery operation and conservation programs for circulating materials. Planning and coordination responsibilities include: * manage and maintain the physical collections in the UCSD Libraries * coordinate the reformatting and digitization of the collections * act as the Libraries' expert on preservation strategies for multimedia resources, working in collaboration with the collection curators and the Digital Library Program Manager * work with collection managers and public services librarians to identify collections at risk and prioritize these for preservation and reformatting * serve as a campus resource on preservation practices * set preservation policy and priorities for print and digital resources * design and execute preservation analyses of the Libraries and their collections * manage disaster response programs including the personnel and education outreach needed to support them * serve as a resource to the UCSD and local communities for disaster preparedness and response for library collections * advise on the conservation treatment of special collections materials. * advise on vendors, standards, and quality control procedures for commercial binding, conservation, and media preservation * work with counterparts in the UC System (UC Libraries Preservation Advisory Group, PAG) to advance the coordinated system-wide preservation of shared print copies. * write and prepare grants to support and augment collection management and preservation projects Coordinated preservation plans for the UCSD Libraries' dispersed multimedia collections are a high local priority. Collection management priorities will continue to evolve and this position will play a key role in formulating strategies and appropriate action plans as these develop. UCSD Librarians are expected to be active professionally, to contribute to developments in the field, and to serve on campus and library-wide committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate. Required Qualifications: * Knowledge of current and emerging digital and traditional preservation technologies, standards, and practices. * Knowledge of and experience with emerging audio, video, and multimedia file formats and metadata and preservation standards. * Demonstrated experience working with preservation reformatting technologies. * Knowledge of current digital library technologies, standards, and best practices. * Demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, implement, and manage effective programs, projects, and services. * Excellent organizational skills with aptitude for complex analytical and detailed work. * Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a changing environment. * Ability to provide effective individual and group training. * Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development. * Excellent visual, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. * ALA-accredited MLS, equivalent advanced degree, or equivalent experience.
