Project Conservator, Kemble Maritime Collection The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens Job #043-07 Grant-sponsored, Five-Year Position, Full-time with Benefits The Huntington <URL:http://www.huntington.org> invites applications for the position of Kemble Conservator. Working as a member of the Conservation team within the Preservation Department, the Kemble Conservator works exclusively on the conservation treatment and housing of designated works on paper and paintings in the Kemble Maritime collection. The Kemble Conservator will also participate in the selection of an assistant for the project. The Huntington's Kemble collection is one of the most extensive collections of maritime material in the country. The conservation project work centers primarily on prints, drawings, and watercolors, which depict subjects ranging from maritime history and technological advances to steamship travel. In addition to the staff conservators, the Kemble Conservator will work with the Chief Curator of Rare Books and the Kemble Librarian, and will report to the Chief Preservation Officer. Essential Functions: The Kemble Conservator performs conservation treatments for works of art and ephemera on paper. The project will include such treatments as surface cleaning, stain reduction, humidification, and paper mends. Protective enclosures will be designed and fabricated for paintings and works on paper. The Project Conservator will direct the Project Assistant, write treatment reports, which include digital photo-documentation, and order supplies for the project. Qualifications desired: Master's degree in Art History or Library/Information Science with the certificate in Conservation, or BA or BS degree plus 3 years experience in the conservation of works on paper in a museum, library, archives, or similar setting.
