Subject: Workshop on characterisation of organic materials
International Workshop: Characterisation of organic materials (binding media, varnishes, pigments) in paint cross-sections Chemistry Department "G. Ciamician" University of Bologna via Selmi 2, Bologna, Italy 21 Sep 2007 The purpose of this two-day meeting will be exchange of information on chemical imaging/mapping techniques that can not only identify the components in a sample but provide information on their location. As well as considering developments in these types of analytical technique, the focus will be on their application to the characterisation of organic materials such as varnishes, binding media, and organic pigments in paint cross sections. The workshop is jointly organised by the University of Bologna (Microchemistry and Microscopy Art Diagnostic Laboratory, M2ADL) and the National Gallery of London (Scientific Department) under the auspices of the Eu-ARTECH project (Access Research and Technology for the conservation of European Cultural Heritage, <URL:http://www.eu-artech.org>, coordinated by the University of Perugia. The workshop is free. The official language of the meeting will be English. Topics State of the art and new improvements in methods for the characterisation of organic materials in paint cross sections by means of: SIMS Infra red spectroscopic devices ToF-SIMS Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) microscopy Staining and immunological methods A registration form together with travel and accommodation details can be obtained by email from Silvia Prati <s.prati [at] unibo__it>. Please register before 30 August 2007. Details can also be found in the 'events' section of the eu-artech website.
