Subject: Lining canvas
I have a question regarding lining a canvas with an elaborated signature and text on the reverse of the original. The canvas is severely damaged, and lining seems the only option to preserve the painting. I am wondering if anyone could provide me with information on lining while trying to keep the reverse as transparent as possible. I know that for this purpose very thin, bleached canvas is used with white wax, and I assume that relating refractive indices do matter in this case. I prefer not to penetrate the original with the adhesive. Does anyone have other suggestions?
