9th International Symposium on Wood and Furniture Conservation
Vernacular Furniture, Conservation and Restoration

To be held in the autumn of 2008 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Regional, country, rustic, folk, rural, to name but a few:
vernacular furniture goes by many names.  It designates furniture
that is made following local traditions of design and construction,
addressing local needs with local products.  Sometimes simple and
raw, other times finely tooled and highly imaginative.

Being less refined than many of its academic or high style
counterparts, vernacular furniture has received little interest for
a long time. As a consequence, many artefacts have been lost and
knowledge regarding historic techniques is threatened as well.
Fortunately, due to a growing awareness, attempts are being made to
save what is left of an important part of our cultural heritage and
identity.

Stichting Ebenist is devoting the 2008 International Symposium on
Wood and Furniture Conservation to Vernacular Furniture. Does its
individuality, the choice of materials and techniques demand a
different approach from the conservator? Conservators, art
historians, scholars and craftsmen are being invited to lecture on
topics such as, but not only:

    Green woodworking, e.g. Windsor chair making

    Historic tools and tool marks

    Decorations: marbling and graining

    Furniture for institutions (schools, hospitals) and religious
    communities, e.g. Shaker, Quaker furniture

    Finishing techniques and materials, such as milk paints and
    other vernacular finishing materials

    Straw, rush, willow and wicker furniture, furniture by basket
    makers

    Reproducing vernacular furniture, lessons to learn from the
    modern woodworker

The organization of work; the local craftsmen and women

Anyone wishing to present a contribution is invited to submit a
provisional title and an abstract of approximately 250 words by 15
November 2007 to:
