Subject: Workshops at York Minster Library
CPD Workshops for Paper, Book and Photographic Materials Conservators at York Minster Library Following on from the well-attended run of Continual Professional Development Workshops earlier this year, we are pleased to announce three new training days, to be hosted by the Conservation Department at York Minster Library. The workshops aim to combine demonstrations with opportunities for hand-on, practical experience in the conservation studio. They also provide a great forum for discussion and the shared experience of CPD. Although aimed initially at conservators, the workshops on digital photography and constructing book cradles may be of interest to those involved with these media in related fields. Digital photography for Book and Paper Conservators Venue: York Minster Library Monday 29 October 2007 10am - 5pm Tutor: Jason Revell Photographic Technician, Conservation Unit University of Northumbria Cost: GBP125 including VAT Digital photography has become an essential tool in recording conservation treatments. This workshop will help participants explore the full potential of digital cameras for documenting works on paper as well as non-destructive analysis of media. Participants will be guided through the technology, discussing camera choices, file types and storing images. Hands-on, practical sessions will make use of material from the archive to show how to achieve best results for visible, raking and transmitted light as well as macro and microscopy imaging. The versatility of many digital cameras also means that they can be used for infra-red, false colour infra-red and UV fluorescence and reflectance imaging. Jason's knowledge and experience in this field should make this highly informative and an essential topic for professional development. The Use of Cyclododecane as a Temporary Fixative in Paper Conservation (morning) Producing and Applying Re-moistenable Support Tissues (afternoon) Venue: York Minster Library Tuesday 30 October 2007 10am - 5pm Tutors: Amy Junker Heslip and Lara Artemis Wellcome Trust Cost: GBP125 including VAT, full-day bookings only The day has been divided to introduce two versatile conservation techniques that have been developed over recent years. As well as providing participants with an up-to-date review of literature, the day is a great opportunity for guided practical experience of these treatments. Cyclododecane has been used as a temporary fixative for water-soluble media on paper, combining low toxicity and ease of removal, since it naturally sublimes out of the paper substrate. Participants will experiment with different methods of application, including an opportunity to use 'new generation' heated spatulas which were demonstrated at the Edinburgh IPC Conference trade show. Small samples of cyclododecane will be provided to take away at the end of the day for further trials. Pre-pasted, re-moistenable tissue repairs have been refined by conservator in the USA, especially for vulnerable media such as iron gall ink and verdigris-damaged papers. They are also used for repairing or lining other water-sensitive material and to safely de-laminate fragmented layers of manuscripts from their bundles. Techniques for the preparation and application of Japanese tissues, using adhesives such as wheat starch paste and methyl cellulose, will be demonstrated and practised. Constructing Book Cradles for Display Venue: York Minster Library Monday 5 November 2007 10am - 5pm Tutor: Jane Rutherston Senior Book Conservator Victoria and Albert Museum Cost: GBP125 including VAT A hands-on, practical day accompanied by demonstrations and a presentation on aspects of the display of books at the V&A with discussion of display guidelines. The main focus will be on learning techniques for constructing book cradles from museum or archive box board and covering them with cloth or paper for an economical and versatile way of safely exhibiting a variety of bound volumes and manuscripts. These techniques are especially useful for individuals working in smaller libraries and museums where Perspex cradles would be too expensive to have made. As well as book conservators, this workshop will be of interest to anyone involved with the care and exhibition of books and participants from other fields are welcome. Each workshop has spaces for a maximum of 10 participants so early booking is recommended.
