AXA Art Research Fellowship Tate, London Location: Tate Britain, Central London Salary: Up to UKP24,000 per annum plus benefits Contract Type: Fixed term for 2 years Closing date: 3 September 2007 Description: Tate aims to increase public awareness and appreciation of art from the 16th century to the modern day. To this end, Tate presents a stimulating programme of exhibitions, displays and other activities in its four galleries and by participating in extensive national and international loan programmes. Through its conservation department, Tate aims to preserve this collection for posterity and has a responsibility to ensure that the public can access its works of art. The Gallery is offering a two-year Fellowship in the Science Section of its Conservation Department funded by AXA Art insurance. The Fellow will assist a senior conservation scientist in the completion of a long-term project into the properties of acrylic emulsion paints and the evaluation of the effects of surface cleaning treatments on acrylic emulsion paintings; the Tate AXA Art Modern Paints Project (TAAMPP). The Fellow will also review paint formulation literature and provide support for ongoing studies into acrylic emulsion paints, including participation in established academic and professional collaborations. In return they will be able to gain research experience by working alongside Tate staff and participating in an international collaboration with other conservation research laboratories. Applicants must have a graduate degree in chemistry or a physical science or equivalent with proven experience in the analysis of organic and polymeric materials and/or conservation-related research (a PhD is preferred). Knowledge of modern painting materials and an interest in conservation would be advantageous. You will be organised, communicative and accurate, with the flexibility to work well in a team.
